TOTAL TMJ REPLACEMENT
Total replacement of the Temporo-mandibular Joint is indicated in certain specific cases.
It involves replacement of the articular fossa and the ramus-condyle unit of the mandible after exposure.
It is indicated in the following situations:
- Severely comminuted condylar fractures and intra-capsular fractures where the occlusion is deranged and the condyle cannot be plated
- Chronic temporomandibular disorders which have not responded to conservative treatment
- TMJ Arthritis
- TMJ Ankylosis
- The maxillofacial team is accomplished at replacing the TMJ in disorders which cannot be treated conservatively.
