Osteomyelitis

Osteomyelitis is a rare but serious condition in which bones becomes infected. This can happen in a number of ways; spread of infection from one part of the body through the bloodstream into the bone, an open wound from a trauma over a bone or a recent surgery that exposed the bone to infection. When an infection happens, it can lead to the eventual death of the bone tissue.

Osteomyelitis is a bacterial, or fungal, infection of the bone. The most common types of bacteria that cause osteomyelitis are Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, and Enterobacteriaceae. Osteomyelitis can be diagnosed through X-Rays or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Treatment focuses on stopping and spread of infection. Osteomyelitis is treated with antibiotics, surgery, or both.

In this case the infection was more serious and required a surgery to remove the infected tissue and bone. Dr. Mathan Mohan surgically removed portions of bone that were infected or dead. This prevented the infection from spreading further and thereby saved the patient.
